PREPARATION GUIDE FOR THE POSITION OF ASSISTANT ENGINEER / SUB‑ASSISTANT ENGINEER (ELECTRICAL‑MECHANICAL) AT AKIJ FLOUR MILLS LTD.

1. KNOW THE CORE REQUIREMENTS
• Minimum educational qualification: Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical or Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional experience: 5 – 7 years in a factory setting, preferably in the electrical or mechanical section.
• Specific industry exposure: Experience in a Group of Companies environment and familiarity with large‑scale food processing or similar manufacturing plants.

2. BUILD THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE BASE
a. Preventive Maintenance
– Review standard preventive maintenance (PM) procedures for the types of machinery used in flour mills (mixers, sifters, conveyors, grinders, packaging lines).
– Understand lubrication schedules, alignment checks, vibration analysis, and thermal imaging techniques.
b. Trouble‑shooting Skills
– Study common electrical faults (motor winding failures, overloads, PLC faults, sensor malfunctions).
– Practice mechanical fault diagnosis (bearing wear, gear backlash, belt tension, pneumatic leaks).
– Familiarize yourself with root‑cause analysis tools such as 5‑Why, Fishbone diagrams and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA).
c. Electrical Systems
– Refresh knowledge of three‑phase power distribution, motor starters, variable frequency drives (VFDs), SCADA/HMI interfaces and protection devices.
– Be comfortable reading single‑line diagrams, wiring schematics and control panel layout.
d. Mechanical Systems
– Review fundamentals of hydraulics, pneumatics, gearboxes, gear trains, belt‑drive systems and heat exchangers.
– Understand standards for rotating equipment balancing, shaft alignment and bearing temperature monitoring.
e. Inventory & Spare‑parts Management
– Study inventory control concepts such as ABC analysis, reorder point calculation, safety stock determination and the use of ERP/MRP modules for engineering stores.

3. GAIN PRACTICAL EXPOSURE
• If currently employed, request to be involved in preventive‑maintenance planning and execution for both electrical and mechanical assets.
• Volunteer for troubleshooting assignments that require cross‑disciplinary coordination.
• Participate in any ongoing plant modification projects to understand change‑over procedures, shutdown planning, and documentation requirements.
• Take short‑term courses or certifications on PLC programming, VFD configuration, and predictive‑maintenance tools (e.g., vibration analysis, infrared thermography).

4. DEVELOP SOFT SKILLS THAT MATCH THE ROLE
– Strong communication: ability to explain technical issues to non‑technical staff and to coordinate with procurement, production and quality teams.
– Time management: prioritize multiple maintenance tasks while adhering to production schedules.
– Problem‑solving mindset: proactive identification of potential failures before they impact operations.
– Team collaboration: work effectively with senior engineers, technicians and external contractors.

5. RESEARCH AKIJ FLOUR MILLS LTD. AND THE FOOD‑PROCESSING INDUSTRY
• Study the company’s product portfolio (Atta, Maida, Suji, wheat bran, aromatic rice, puff rice, mustard oil, red lentil, etc.) to understand the range of processes involved.
• Review the SUNSHINE brand positioning and the quality‑assurance standards that the company promotes.
• Learn about the typical plant layout of a flour mill: raw material handling, cleaning, milling, sieving, blending, packaging and storage.
• Identify key regulatory requirements for food‑grade equipment (HACCP, GMP, ISO 22000) and consider how they affect maintenance practices.

6. PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
• Tailor your CV to highlight the 5‑7 years of relevant factory‑level experience, specifying the types of machinery and electrical systems you have maintained.
• Include concrete achievements such as “Reduced unplanned downtime by 15 % through implementation of a preventive‑maintenance schedule for 30 critical assets.”
• Attach certifications or training records related to PLC, VFD, predictive maintenance, and safety.
• Write a cover letter that connects your background to the responsibilities listed: preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, spare‑parts inventory control, and project‑modification support.

7. INTERVIEW PREPARATION
a. Technical Questions
– Be ready to discuss a recent preventive‑maintenance program you designed: frequency, checklists, KPI tracking.
– Explain a complex troubleshooting case where you identified the root cause and restored equipment.
– Describe how you manage spare‑parts inventory, including reorder levels and cost optimisation.
– Answer scenario‑based questions on plant modification (e.g., adding a new conveyor belt or upgrading a motor).
b. Behavioural Questions
– Provide examples of teamwork with production staff to minimise downtime.
– Discuss a time when you had to prioritize conflicting maintenance requests.
– Explain how you stay updated with new technologies and industry best practices.
c. Questions to Ask the Interviewer
– What are the current major maintenance challenges at the plant?
– How does the engineering team interact with the quality‑assurance department?
– What is the typical lifecycle of key equipment and the planned replacement strategy?

8. ON‑THE‑JOB READINESS AFTER HIRING
• Review the plant’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance manuals and safety documentation as soon as you join.
• Conduct a walkthrough of all critical assets to note their condition and any immediate corrective actions.
• Establish a baseline of equipment performance metrics (run‑time hours, MTBF, MTTR) for future improvement projects.
• Build a rapport with the store‑keeper to understand the current spare‑parts stock situation and identify any critical shortages.

By following these steps you will strengthen both your technical competence and your alignment with the expectations of Akij Flour Mills Ltd., positioning yourself as a strong candidate for the Assistant Engineer / Sub‑Assistant Engineer role. Good luck!
