PRE‑JOB PREPARATION GUIDE
FOR THE POSITION: CARDIAC SURGERY ASSISTANT (OR SIMILAR)

PURPOSE
To help you meet the eligibility criteria, acquire the required competencies, and present yourself as a strong candidate for the role described.

1. ACADEMIC AND QUALIFICATION CHECK

- Verify that you hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from a recognized university.
- Ensure you have completed a postgraduate qualification in Cardiac Surgery, Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (MS, FCPS or an equivalent). Keep the certificates, transcripts and registration documents (medical council, specialist board) ready for verification.

2. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

- Total professional experience should be at least one year post‑graduation.
- Within that year, you must have spent a minimum of 12 months in a reputable cardiac surgery center handling both elective and emergency cases.

3. CLINICAL SKILLS – WHAT YOU MUST BE ABLE TO DO

- Perform median sternotomy, open and close chest safely.
- Harvest arterial (internal mammary) and venous (saphenous) conduits for bypass grafting.
- Demonstrate full knowledge of the step‑by‑step sequence of the most common cardiac procedures (coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacements/repairs, congenital repairs, aortic surgeries).
- Manage cardiopulmonary bypass machine under supervision.
- Conduct intra‑operative trans‑esophageal echocardiography (if required).
- Provide postoperative care in ICU, step‑down unit and wards, including chest tube management, hemodynamic monitoring and early mobilization.

4. NON‑CLINICAL COMPETENCIES

- Punctuality: record your daily attendance for the past six months and be ready to discuss any irregularities.
- Communication: practice explaining patient conditions concisely to senior consultants and clearly briefing residents.
- Teaching ability: prepare short teaching points or case discussions you could deliver to junior doctors.
- Emergency response: rehearse your algorithm for cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhage, and sudden hemodynamic collapse.
- Interpersonal skills: develop a plan for building rapport with nurses, technicians and support staff (e.g., daily brief huddles).

5. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME)

- Enrol in at least two accredited CME courses in the last 12 months (e.g., minimally invasive cardiac surgery, hybrid procedures, advanced echocardiography).
- Keep certificates, attendance sheets and any evaluation forms ready.
- Be prepared to discuss what you learned and how you have applied it in practice.

6. DOCUMENTATION TO BE READY

- Updated curriculum vitae (CV) – organized chronologically, highlighting:
• MBBS and postgraduate credentials with dates and institutions.
• Any fellowships, research projects, publications or conference presentations.
• Detailed list of cardiac procedures performed (type, number, role – primary surgeon, assistant, observer).
• CME participation, workshops, certifications (e.g., BLS, ACLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support).
- Copies of medical registration, specialist board membership, and any work permits if applicable.
- Letters of recommendation – preferably from the head of cardiac surgery or senior consultants who can attest to your operative skills, punctuality and team‑work.
- Attendance records or rota sheets demonstrating reliability.

7. PRE‑INTERVIEW PREPARATION

A. KNOW THE INSTITUTION
- Review the hospital’s cardiac surgery department structure, number of beds, types of procedures offered and recent achievements.
- Identify the Head of Department, senior consultants and any key faculty members; know their areas of expertise.

B. CLINICAL SCENARIOS
- Prepare to discuss at least three challenging cases you managed: patient presentation, pre‑op assessment, operative plan, intra‑op course, postoperative course and final outcome.
- Emphasize your decision‑making, teamwork and any modifications you made to standard protocols.

C. BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS
- Expect questions on punctuality, handling emergencies, collaborating with nursing staff, and teaching residents.
- Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) format to deliver concise, outcome‑focused answers.

D. ROSTER FLEXIBILITY
- Review typical shift patterns for cardiac surgery units (day, night, on‑call).
- Prepare a statement confirming your willingness to work the approved roster and to be on call for emergencies.

8. POST‑INTERVIEW FOLLOW‑UP

- Send a thank‑you email within 24 hours, reiterating your enthusiasm, highlighting one key point discussed, and attaching any requested documents that you may not have brought.

CHECKLIST BEFORE SUBMISSION

- [ ] MBBS and postgraduate degree certificates scanned and clear.
- [ ] Specialist registration & license up‑to‑date.
- [ ] CV formatted, proof‑read, and tailored to the job description.
- [ ] Letters of recommendation (2–3) obtained and signed.
- [ ] CME certificates compiled.
- [ ] Operative log sheet (procedure numbers, dates, roles).
- [ ] Attendance/roster proof (if requested).
- [ ] Personal statement (1‑page) linking your experience with the hospital’s needs.

FINAL ADVICE

- Treat every patient interaction as a demonstration of the qualities the employer seeks – timeliness, thoroughness, clear communication and swift emergency response.
- Keep your surgical techniques sharp by regularly practicing on simulation labs or assisting senior surgeons whenever possible.
- Continue to expand your knowledge base through journals, webinars and peer discussions; the more current you are, the more credible you will appear in CME‑related discussions.
- Demonstrate humility and a collaborative attitude; cardiac surgery is a high‑stakes team sport, and the ability to support senior consultants while teaching residents is essential.

By following this structured preparation plan you will not only satisfy the minimum criteria but also position yourself as a proactive, skilled and dependable candidate ready to contribute immediately to the cardiac surgery department. Good luck!
