PREPARING FOR THE MEAL COORDINATOR POSITION WITH HELEN KELLER INTERNATIONAL – BANGLADESH

1. UNDERSTAND THE ORGANISATION AND PROJECT CONTEXT
• Review Helen Keller International’s mission, values and strategic priorities. Pay special attention to the focus on nutrition, eye health, WASH and livelihoods, and the emphasis on reaching remote, hard‑to‑reach and marginalized communities.
• Study the “Access to and Utilization of Lifesaving Services by Marginalized Communities in Chittagong Hill Tracts” project description. Know the three districts (Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari), the key interventions (malnutrition screening, SAM/MAM management, cash‑based livelihoods, water and sanitation infrastructure, capacity building) and the expected outcomes for each sector.
• Familiarise yourself with the broader development landscape in the Chittagong Hill Tracts: major ethnic groups, security considerations, government partners, NGOs and other donors active in nutrition, WASH and livelihoods.

2. MATCH YOUR QUALIFICATIONS TO THE RECRUITMENT REQUIREMENTS
• Academic background – ensure your Master’s degree (Statistics, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Public Health or related) is clearly stated, with any relevant coursework in monitoring and evaluation, epidemiology or data analysis highlighted.
• Experience – map at least seven years of progressive MEAL work to the responsibilities listed. Identify concrete examples where you designed a MEAL plan, defined SMART indicators, managed multi‑sector data collection and produced donor reports.
• Supervisory record – prepare evidence of at least three years managing field teams, including coaching, performance reviews and capacity‑building activities. Include the size of teams supervised and the contexts (e.g., remote, multi‑ethnic).
• Technical skills – list proficiency with digital data collection tools (KoboToolbox, ODK or equivalents), database management (Excel, Access, SQL, DHIS2), statistical packages (Stata, SPSS, R) and data visualization (Power BI, Tableau, Excel dashboards). Provide brief case studies showing how you ensured data quality and used findings for adaptive management.
• Sector experience – articulate your work in nutrition, WASH and livelihoods, especially any integration of these sectors in a single project. If you have worked in the CHT or similar remote, multi‑ethnic settings, place this information prominently.

3. REFINE YOUR RESUME
• Use a clean, professional layout with clear headings: Contact Information, Professional Summary, Core Competencies, Professional Experience, Education, Technical Skills, Languages, Certifications.
• In the Professional Summary, write 3‑4 lines that capture your MEAL expertise, supervisory experience and familiarity with the CHT environment.
• For each relevant job, use bullet points (without markdown symbols) that start with strong action verbs (Led, Developed, Supervised, Designed, Implemented, Analyzed, Presented). Quantify achievements where possible (e.g., “Reduced data validation errors by 30 % through introduction of weekly spot‑checks”).
• Highlight any experience with donor reporting requirements (USAID, UNICEF, EU, etc.) and with building beneficiary feedback or grievance mechanisms.

4. CRAFT A TARGETED COVER LETTER
• Address the letter to the recruitment email address and include the exact subject line requested: “Application for the Position of MEAL Coordinator”.
• Opening paragraph – state the position you are applying for, where you learned about the vacancy and a brief sentence linking your background to the role.
• Middle paragraphs –
– Explain how your experience designing and implementing MEAL systems aligns with the project’s need for a robust, sector‑integrated framework.
– Provide a specific example of supervising MEAL officers in a remote, multi‑sector context, focusing on capacity building and quality assurance.
– Demonstrate your familiarity with the Chittagong Hill Tracts, citing any previous work or field visits, and discuss how you will navigate cultural and logistical challenges.
• Closing paragraph – express enthusiasm for contributing to Helen Keller International’s mission, mention your availability for an interview and thank the reader.
• Keep the letter to one page, use a professional font, and proofread for grammar and spelling.

5. PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW
a. RESEARCH COMMON INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR MEAL COORDINATOR ROLES
– How do you develop a MEAL plan that aligns with a project’s logical framework?
– Describe a time when data quality issues threatened project reporting. What steps did you take?
– How have you integrated nutrition, WASH and livelihood indicators in a single monitoring system?
– Explain your approach to supervising field MEAL staff in remote contexts.
– What strategies do you use to ensure beneficiary feedback mechanisms are accessible and effective?
b. PRACTICE STAR RESPONSES (Situation, Task, Action, Result) WITH SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM YOUR CAREER.
c. REVIEW KEY TECHNICAL TOOLS. Be prepared to discuss your experience with KoboToolbox/ODK form design, data cleaning workflows, dashboard creation and statistical analysis. If possible, have a short portfolio or screenshots of dashboards you have built.
d. ANTICIPATE SCENARIOS RELATING TO THE CHT:
– Managing data collection across multiple ethnic groups with language barriers.
– Coordinating with government health facilities and NGOs that have differing reporting schedules.
– Responding to a sudden outbreak of acute malnutrition and adjusting monitoring priorities.
e. PREPARE QUESTIONS TO ASK THE INTERVIEWERS. Examples:
– How does the MEAL team currently interact with technical partners in each sector?
– What are the main challenges faced in data collection during the rainy season in the hill districts?
– How does Helen Keller International support professional development for MEAL staff?

6. LOGISTICAL PREPARATIONS
• Ensure you have a reliable internet connection and a quiet space for virtual interviews, if applicable.
• Have digital copies of your resume, cover letter, certificates and any relevant work samples ready to upload or share.
• Verify the email address (Bangladesh-Recruitment@hki.org) and send your application before the deadline of 8 December 2025. Use a clear subject line and attach files in PDF format.

7. POST‑APPLICATION FOLLOW‑UP
• Mark the submission date on your calendar.
• If you have not heard back within two weeks, send a courteous follow‑up email reiterating your interest and asking for an update on the recruitment timeline.

8. PERSONAL PREPARATION
• Reflect on the core competencies listed (pro‑active, analytical thinking, result oriented, impact managing, writing, flexibility, development orientation, thoroughness). Identify concrete stories that demonstrate each competency and be ready to discuss them.
• Review the organization’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and a smoke‑free workplace; think about how you will contribute to a respectful, inclusive team culture.

By systematically aligning your education, experience and technical expertise with the specific demands of the MEAL Coordinator role, and by presenting a polished application package, you will position yourself as a strong candidate for this rewarding opportunity with Helen Keller International in Bangladesh. Good luck!
