ইংরেজি শব্দের মধ্যে বর্ণের অবস্থান ও অন্য বর্ণের সাথে বিন্যাসের ওপর ভিত্তি করে অনেক বর্ণের উচ্চারণ হয় না। ইংরেজিতে প্রায় ৬০ ভাগ শব্দের মধ্যে অনুচ্চারিত বর্ণ রয়েছে। তাই ইংরেজি শব্দের শুদ্ধ উচ্চারণের জন্য অনুচ্চারিত বর্ণ সম্পর্কে ধারণা থাকা জরুরি।
ইংরেজি শব্দের কোন অবস্থানে কোন বর্ণের উচ্চারণ হবে না – এ ধরনের কিছু নিয়মকানুন এখানে দেওয়া হলো। এছাড়া নিয়মের বাইরেও ব্যতিক্রমধর্মী কিছু শব্দ আছে যেখানে এক বা একাধিক বর্ণ অনুচ্চারিত থাকে।
