ইংরেজি ভাষা আন্তর্জাতিক ভাষার মর্যাদা পাওয়ার পর থেকে এই ভাষার অনেক গুলো উপভাষা (dialect) সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। যদিও ইংরেজি ভাষার উৎপত্তি ব্রিটেনেই, American English এর প্রভাব এবং ব্যবহার এখন অনেক বেশি। তাই এখন British English (BrE) এবং American English (AmE) উভয়কেই standard English এর মর্যাদা দেওয়া হয়। British English (BrE) এবং American English (AmE) এর মধ্যে বেশিরভাগ পার্থক্যগুলিই হচ্ছে শব্দগত, উচ্চারণগত এবং বানানগত পার্থক্য। তবে, ব্যকরনগতও কিছু পার্থক্য রয়েছে যেগুলো বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হয়। এখানে উল্লেখিত প্রায় সব কাঠামোই উভয় প্রজাতির মধ্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়। সাধারণত ভাষার written format এ তেমন একটা পার্থক্য দেখা না গেলেও BrE এবং AmE এর accent – উচ্চারণগত অনেক।
Grammar সবসময়ই পরিবর্তিত হচ্ছে। বর্তমান সময়ে আমেরিকান সংস্কৃতি, মিডিয়া এবং ইন্টারনেটের প্রভাবে AmE এর অনেক grammatical style ও BrE গ্রহণ করছে।
Verb - ক্রিয়াগত পার্থক্য
Be going to
AmE speaker রা সাধারণত street direction দেয়ার ক্ষেত্রে be going to (informal short form gonna) ব্যবহার করে যেটা BrE তে খুবই কম ব্যবহার করা হয়। BrE speaker রা সাধারণত imperatives (with and without you) এবং present simple অথবা future simple এর will ব্যবহার করে।

[BrE] You go four blocks from here and you will find a church.
Or, Go four blocks from here and you will find a church.
[AmE] You’re gonna walk 5 minutes to the south and you’re gonna find a big house.

Burn, learn, dream, smell, spell, spill,
BrE এ আমরা উপরোক্ত শব্দগুলোকে past form এবং past participle form এ পরিবর্তন করার ক্ষেত্রে –ed অথবা –t উভয়ই যোগ করি কিন্তু AmE এ শুধু -ed যোগ করা হয়।
[BrE] He had dreamt of being a cricketer when he was young. (Or “he had dreamed …”)
[AmE] He had dreamed of being a basketball player when he was young.
[BrE] He learnt to speak fluent German. (Or “he learned …”)
[AmE] He learned to speak fluent German.

Fit
BrE এ fit এর past form হচ্ছে fitted কিন্তু AmE এ fit এর past form, fit ই থাকে।
[BrE] The shirt fitted her perfectly when she was eight.
[AmE] The shirt fit her perfectly when she was eight.
Get
BrE এ get এর তিনটা form রয়েছে - get (base form), got (past simple) and got (past participle form) কিন্তু AmE এ get এর past participle হচ্ছে gotten:
[AmE] The weather has gotten worse.
Get + to-infinitive সাধারণত AmE এ achievements, ‘manage to’ অথবা ‘be able to’ বোঝাতে ব্যবহার করা হয়। BrE এ get+to ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
[AmE] Did you get to go to the MCG many times?
We got to see a lot of players.
Have and have got
BrE এ have got সাধারণত possession or relationships বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয় কিন্তু AmE এ শুধু have ব্যবহৃত হয়।
[BrE] I’ve got two brothers in Auckland.
[AmE] I have two brothers in Auckland.
Have got to and have to
Have got to সাধারণত BrE তে এবং Have to (without got) সাধারণত AmE এ বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
[BrE] We’ve got to return to the hospital as soon as possible.
[AmE] We have to return to the hospital as soon as possible.
Shall
BrE speaker রা সাধারণত I এবং we এর পরে formal situation এ shall ব্যবহার করে। AmE speaker রা will ব্যবহার করে।

I shall be back in an hour.
We shall talk about this later.
[AmE]
I will be back in an hour.
We will talk about this later.
Substitute verb do
BrE speakers রা সাধারণত substitute verb হিসেবে short clause গুলোতে modal verb এর সাথে do ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু AmE speaker রা শুধুমাত্র modal verb ই ব্যবহার করে।

Grammar - ব্যাকরণগত পার্থক্য
Present Perfect and Past Simple
BrE speaker রা present perfect tense বেশি ব্যবহার করে আর AmE speaker রা একইরকম situation বিশেষত yet এবং already র ক্ষেত্রে এ past simple বেশি ব্যবহার করে।
[BrE] Have I already told you that?
[AmE] Did I already tell you that?
[BrE] Have you had a reply from that girl yet?
[AmE] Did you have a reply from that girl yet?
Past Perfect
Past এ ঘটা দুইটি ঘটনা বর্ণনা করার ক্ষেত্রে AmE speaker রা past perfect ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু BrE speaker রা সাধারণত past simple এর পরে then ব্যবহার করে আবার past simple ব্যবহার করে এবং past perfect দুইভাবেই ব্যবহার করে।
[AmE] We had watched the movie before he came.
[BrE] We watched the movie and then he came.
Or
We had watched the movie before he came.
[AmE] He had played for thirty years before he retired.
[BrE] He played for thirty years and then he retired.

He had played for thirty years before he retired.
Preposition - পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়গত পার্থক্য
At the weekend/on the weekend
BrE speaker রা at the weekend এবং AmE speaker রা on the weekend ব্যবহার করতে বেশি পছন্দ করে।
[BrE] What are you planning to do at the weekend?
[AmE] What do you want to do on the weekend?
In/for+ period of time after a negative
AmE speaker রা negative + a period of time verb এর ক্ষেত্রে in ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু BrE speaker রা for ব্যবহার করে।
[AmE] I haven’t seen her in years.
[BrE] I haven’t seen her for years.
Inand on with street names:
Street names এর সাথে AmE speaker রা on ব্যবহার করে আর BrE speaker রা in ব্যবহার করে।
[BrE] We lived in Browning Street.
[AmE] We lived on Perot Street.
Through
AmE speaker রা অনেক জায়গায় through ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু BrE speaker রা কিছু নির্দিষ্ট জায়গায় ব্যবহার করে। পার্থক্যের জায়গা হচ্ছে AmE speaker রা সময় বোঝানোর জন্যেও through ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু BrE speaker রা সেক্ষেত্রে to ব্যবহার করে।
[AmE] He works Monday through Friday.
[BrE] He works Monday to Friday.
Adjective এবং Adverb -এর পার্থক্য
Really, real
Informal situation এ AmE speaker রা প্রায়ই কোন একটা adjective এর আগে really এর পরিবর্তে real ব্যবহার করে যা BrE speaker রা কখনোই ব্যবহার করে না।
[AmE] It’s real funny!
[BrE] It’s really funny.
[AmE] It was a real good journey.
[BrE] It was a really good journey.
Well, good
বাক্যে adverb হিসেবে BrE speaker রা good এর adverb form- well ব্যবহার করে এবং AmE speaker রা good বেশি ব্যবহার করে।
[AmE]
A: How are you?
B: I’m good.
[BrE]
A: How are you?
B: I’m well. (Or I’m fine)
[AmE]
The movie we saw last night was real good.
[BrE]
I am really well today.
Likely
AmE speaker রা likely কে উভয় adverb এবং adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু BrE speaker রা শুধুমাত্র adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে।
[AmE] There will likely be other contenders. (Likely as an adverb)
[BrE] Contenders are likely to be there. (Likely as an adjective)
